Rio Ferdinand names most important footballer for any team on planet

Rio Ferdinand Calls Rodri the Most Important Footballer in the World
Former England international Rio Ferdinand has identified Manchester City midfielder Rodri as the most crucial player in football today.
On his podcast, Ferdinand praised Rodri’s performance, describing the Spanish captain as a top player. “He’s won the Ballon d’Or; he’s won everything,” said Ferdinand, a Manchester United legend.
Ferdinand added that if FC Barcelona succeeds in acquiring Rodri, they could pose a significant threat this season. “Rodri is the most important footballer for any team on the planet right now and has been for the last few years. He’s a top player and a top pro,” he stated.
He also acknowledged the challenges Manchester City may face this season. “I think Man City have a huge challenge this year in competing in the way they have in the last eight or nine years,” he remarked.
Rodri recently led the Spain national team to victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they defeated Argentina in the final. The 30-year-old midfielder has won the Ballon d’Or previously and is currently linked with potential transfers to both Barcelona and Real Madrid this summer.
