Fatal Road Crash Claims 12 Lives in Edo State

At least 12 people died in a serious road accident in Edo State, while 14 others sustained injuries of varying severity.

Patricia Onwochei, spokesperson for the Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident, which occurred at the Egono community along the Auchi-Ewu-Benin road.

Onwochei reported that the accident was caused by wrongful overtaking. A truck, which was transporting passengers and goods toward Benin City, lost control after overtaking another vehicle at high speed. The truck skidded off the road and overturned, trapping several passengers inside.

Of the deceased, one was buried shortly after the accident, while 11 others were taken to the St. Lazarus Hospital mortuary. According to initial reports, a total of 37 passengers were involved in the crash; while some emerged unscathed, the accident resulted in 12 fatalities and 14 injuries.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
