S-West PDP factions bicker over Makinde, Fayose

Dispute Erupts Among South-West PDP Factions Over Makinde, Fayose Remarks

IBADAN — Tensions escalated within the South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following comments made by former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose regarding current Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. A faction loyal to Makinde publicly expressed its support for him and affirmed its allegiance to the party’s National Working Committee, chaired by Aminu Turaki.
During a press briefing at the PDP’s zonal headquarters, Adagunodo House, Publicity Secretary Sanya Atofarati emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing economic and security issues facing Nigeria. He stated, “The South West Zonal Executive Committee unequivocally identifies with and stands firmly behind Governor Seyi Makinde, whose leadership continues to exemplify stability, focus, and commitment to the welfare of the people.”
The party denounced rumors of an impeachment plot against Makinde, labeling them as baseless and an attempt to create political unrest. Atofarati also criticized Fayose for making what the party branded “reckless and divisive” comments, which could incite further discord, particularly concerning traditional institutions.
The PDP’s statement characterized Fayose’s remarks as “irresponsible and self-serving,” asserting they do not represent the views of the South West faction. The party reiterated that Fayose remains expelled and should avoid actions that could undermine the relationship between the Makinde administration and the Olubadan Palace.
In the midst of this conflict, the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, disavowed the press conference held in Ibadan. In a statement, Zonal Publicity Secretary Akinloye Oyeniyi referred to the event as a “handiwork of organized impostors” lacking any legitimate mandate. Oyeniyi clarified that the Zonal Chairman, Engr. Deji Doherty, was in Abuja attending a National Executive Committee meeting at the time of the press conference.
“The claim of an Ibadan press conference is therefore a barefaced lie,” he stated. “These are the ones whose agenda was to destabilize the party but they failed. Karma never forgets, and wickedness by default carries consequences too.”
The ongoing disputes within the PDP highlight the challenges facing the party as it seeks to maintain unity and cohesion in South-West Nigeria.
