Senator Marafa dumps ADC for NDC, wishes former party well

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA — Former Senator Kabir Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central in the 7th and 8th National Assembly, has officially defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He expressed goodwill toward his previous party during his announcement.

This transition occurs shortly after Marafa encouraged his supporters in Zamfara State to begin a registration drive for the ADC. His move is seen as part of ongoing political realignments as Nigeria approaches its next election cycle, a shift that analysts suggest may significantly alter the political landscape, particularly in the North-West geopolitical zone.

During a formal reception on Tuesday in Abuja, organized by NDC National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson, Marafa provided insight into his decision. He stated that his choice was motivated by considerations of inclusion, equity, and internal democracy, emphasizing the need for political participation to be founded on fairness and opportunity.

“Politics is about inclusion, appreciation, and participation. Only when you are given the opportunity can you truly serve your people,” Marafa remarked.

Reflecting on his involvement in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, Marafa noted the state’s significant contribution to the party’s electoral success in 2015. He voiced concerns regarding the lack of adequate recognition for those contributions, particularly pointing out imbalances in political appointments, such as ministerial roles. He argued that appointments should consider both merit and contributions to party development, cautioning that inequities could undermine trust within political organizations.

Marafa clarified that his defection was not driven by personal ambitions but by a desire to align with a platform that promotes his values of fairness and collective participation. He underscored the importance of internal democracy in enhancing Nigeria’s political system and urged parties to foster environments that enable members to engage effectively.

While acknowledging that patience and loyalty are vital in politics, he asserted they must also be complemented by recognition and fair treatment. “Silence does not mean weakness. It often reflects patience, observation, and strategic thinking,” he added.

In his welcome address, Senator Seriake Dickson praised Marafa as a seasoned and principled political figure, noting that his arrival would bolster the NDC’s influence in Zamfara State and the broader North-West region.

Dickson stated that Marafa is expected to take on leadership roles, mobilize grassroots support, and contribute to the NDC’s vision of inclusive governance. He emphasized Marafa’s role in addressing pressing issues in Zamfara, including insecurity, while promoting development in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Additionally, Dickson indicated that Marafa would engage actively in the party’s internal processes, such as congresses and primaries, and assist in expanding party membership and fortifying organizational structures.
