Super Falcons lose to South Africa, fail to qualify for 2027 World Cup
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will not participate in the 2027 Women’s World Cup following a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the qualifying round.
The Falcons faced a second opportunity to secure a spot after their exit in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. However, after a scoreless first half, they fell behind in the second half when South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane each found the net.
Although Christy Ucheibe scored from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit, Nigeria was unable to find another goal before the final whistle, eliminating their chances of forcing extra time.
This marks the first instance in which both the Super Falcons and the Super Eagles have failed to qualify for their respective World Cups simultaneously.
