Suspect arrested with 100 rounds of ammunition at Zamfara–Katsina border

Security Forces Intercept Suspected Arms Trafficker in Zamfara State

Security operatives apprehended a 30-year-old man, Umar Sani, on April 17, 2026, while he was allegedly transporting 100 rounds of live ammunition near the border between Zamfara and Katsina States.

The arrest occurred during a stop-and-search operation at a checkpoint in the Yankara area around 7:20 a.m. The operation followed actionable intelligence received by security forces. Sani, a resident of Magami village in Gusau Local Government Area, was reportedly on a motorcycle traveling from Abuja to his hometown when he was stopped.

A search of the motorcycle revealed 100 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, commonly associated with AK-47 rifles. The ammunition was allegedly concealed within the motorcycle’s fuel tank, which security officials believe indicates a deliberate attempt to evade detection. There are concerns that this could be linked to a broader supply network for illegal arms.

Authorities confirmed that Sani is currently in custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the source of the ammunition and identifying any potential accomplices.

The interception is part of a sustained effort by security agencies to disrupt the illegal arms trade that contributes to escalating criminal activities in the region. Officials emphasized the need for community vigilance and encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities that could aid in these efforts.
