Suspected cultist arrested with firearm as Imo police intensify action against cultism

Imo State Police Arrest Suspect Linked to Cult Activity

Imo State Police operatives from the Nekede Divisional Headquarters have arrested a 19-year-old man, Isa Chinagro, suspected to be affiliated with the Neo Black Movement of Africa (NBMA), commonly known as Black Axe. This arrest is connected to an attempted murder incident in the area.

The police action was prompted by a distress call from the Vigilante Coordinator of Umuoma, Nekede, reporting that a young man had been attacked and shot by suspected cult members.

Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the police command, stated that officers quickly mobilized to the scene, leading to the apprehension of Chinagro, a native of Ogwa in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, currently residing on Royce Road, Owerri Municipal. Initial investigations have indicated that he is a member of the notorious cult.

During the operation, authorities recovered a locally made single-barrel pistol and an expended cartridge from the suspect. Other members of the gang reportedly fled the scene.

One victim of the shooting was rescued and transported to a hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment. The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has launched further inquiries, and a manhunt for the remaining gang members is ongoing.

Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso emphasized that cult-related activities pose a severe threat to public safety. He urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children and to discourage involvement in cultism, substance abuse, and other criminal behaviors.

The police also called on residents to remain vigilant and assist law enforcement by providing timely and credible information. Community members can report concerns through the nearest police station or the command’s emergency line at 0803 477 3600.

Okoye further noted that security measures have been intensified at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), and Federal Polytechnic Nekede to prevent cult-related incidents.
