Thugs invade Kano phone market, injure traders, loot shops

Tension Erupts at Kano’s Farm Centre Market Amid Violent Attack

KANO, Nigeria — Tensions escalated at the Farm Centre phone market on Wednesday afternoon when approximately 200 suspected thugs invaded the area, attacking traders and making off with goods.

Witnesses reported that the assailants, armed with cutlasses and other weapons, were allegedly escorting Abdussalam Abdulkareem, a senatorial aspirant for Kano Central, to an event at a nearby hotel. The incident occurred around 1:25 PM and quickly spread to adjacent markets, including City Centre and New Dubai.

Market chairman Jamilu Bala Gama described the scene, stating, “They were many, about 200 or even more. They attacked innocent people and marketers, injuring them and stealing their property.” As the chaos unfolded, many traders were forced to close their shops and flee the area.

Gama condemned the increasing frequency of such incidents, attributing them to politicians who he claims move with armed groups, thereby inciting unrest. “We plan to take legal action against politicians generating tension in our markets by moving around with hoodlums,” he said.

Additionally, Gama noted that police officers responding to the incident faced violence, with reports indicating that some were injured during the confrontation.

The situation remains under investigation as authorities work to restore order and address the concerns of local traders.
