Thugs Disrupt PDP National Convention, Assault Journalists; Jonathan Confirmed as Presidential Candidate

Political thugs armed with sticks and other weapons interrupted the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja. The event was organized by the party’s interim National Working Committee, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.

The assailants disrupted proceedings, forcing the event to a sudden halt. Reports indicate that party members and journalists were harassed during the chaos, with several mobile phones and personal belongings reportedly stolen. The violence incited panic among attendees, prompting many to flee for their safety.

The faction intended for the convention to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate. However, following a directive from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) that restricted event venues to recognized political parties, the PDP was compelled to change locations shortly before the event. The police had blocked access to the initial venue, leading party officials to announce a new site in Area 10 of the territory.

At the new location, which was identified as a private residence, Prof. Jerry Gana presented the Certificate of Return on behalf of Jonathan. Following the ratification, party leaders and delegates returned to the original venue for additional convention activities. It was during this return that the attack occurred, resulting in assaults and thefts directed at attendees and media personnel.

The PDP condemned the violence, underscoring the need for a secure environment for political engagements.
