Tinubu’s administration has destroyed democracy – Galadima

Galadima Criticizes Tinubu Administration, Claims it Undermines Democracy

ABUJA — Buba Galadima, Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of dismantling democracy in Nigeria during remarks at the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) aspirants’ summit on Saturday.

Galadima also alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) established a committee prior to the presentation of the electoral bill to the National Assembly.

He argued that the recently enacted Electoral Act of 2026 was crafted to hinder opposition parties. “By the time the National Assembly deliberated and finalized the draft electoral bill, within an hour, the President was signing the bill,” he said, questioning whether adequate review had been conducted.

He emphasized that the contents of the bill favored the ruling party, asserting that it limited candidate selection to two methods: consensus and direct primaries. Galadima suggested that the APC anticipated opposition parties would struggle to reach consensus, implying that direct primaries would be their only viable option.

“No political party in the opposition can conduct direct primaries and emerge entirely unscathed,” he stated. He expressed confidence in the NDC, describing it as a robust political platform capable of challenging and potentially displacing the APC from power.

Galadima cautioned that conducting primaries within the party could lead to disruptions and result in a lack of candidates. He advocated for unity within the party’s structure, proposing collective support for candidates selected by major stakeholders in their respective constituencies.

This commentary follows ongoing discussions regarding electoral reforms and the implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.
