Tragedy as driver fleeing from VIO kills pregnant woman in Jos

Fatal Accident Claims Life of Pregnant Woman in Jos
A heavily pregnant woman, identified as Ruth Nen Maurice, died in a tragic accident in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. The incident involved a driver reportedly attempting to evade officials from the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
Witnesses said the accident occurred in the city center as the driver executed a dangerous maneuver to escape a VIO checkpoint. At the time of the incident, Maurice was standing by the roadside, waiting for transportation to a hospital for antenatal care.
Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, a close friend of Maurice, shared the news on Facebook, describing the difficulty of the moment. “Ruth Nen Maurice… My dear, it’s hard to post this but God knows best,” he wrote. He noted that Maurice was pregnant with twins and was close to her due date when the accident occurred.
Odumu expressed his sorrow over the loss, stating, “A mother who was preparing to welcome twins back home never made it alive. Her unborn babies never got the chance to cry, breathe, or see this world because of somebody’s reckless decision.”
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident through spokesman DSP Alfred Alabo, who announced that the driver had been arrested. An investigation is currently underway, and the driver is expected to face charges in court following its completion.
Attempts to reach Mr. Jonathan Zam, the Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer of Plateau State, for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls or messages.
