Chelsea Targets Defender Giorgio Scalvini Following Danny Welbeck Signing
Chelsea Football Club is poised to acquire Italian defender Giorgio Scalvini, contingent upon the successful completion of the transfer for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck.
On Saturday, Chelsea confirmed they had signed Welbeck, a former England international, on a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge. The 35-year-old forward, who has played for Manchester United and Arsenal before his tenure with Brighton, becomes Chelsea’s fourth signing this summer, joining Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Despite recent acquisitions, Chelsea is actively pursuing further signings to bolster the squad under new manager Xabi Alonso. According to reports, the club has turned its focus to Atalanta and the 22-year-old Scalvini, who has made over 100 appearances for his childhood club, contributing to their Europa League victory in 2024.
Scalvini’s performances have attracted interest from several European clubs, and Chelsea is reportedly in discussions with his representatives regarding a potential transfer. However, the Blues face competition from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and fellow Premier League club Newcastle United, both interested in securing the young defender’s services.
Tottenham’s interest is partly driven by the anticipated departure of Argentine international Cristian Romero to Inter Milan for a deal valued at £34 million. Atalanta is aware of the interest surrounding Scalvini and is reportedly seeking a minimum fee of £42 million for the centre-back.
Scalvini has expressed a desire to move to the Premier League, considering it an opportune time to advance his career. The arrival of Lacroix means Chelsea currently has ten central defenders on its roster, but Alonso is reportedly prepared to offload at least five of them. Trevoh Chalobah is nearing a transfer to Como, while Axel Disasi has been linked with a move to Italy, and Benoit Badiashile has acknowledged that his Chelsea career may be over.
Welbeck, Chelsea’s newest addition, enjoyed a career-best season last year, scoring 13 goals in the Premier League. He has expressed a strong determination to succeed in west London.
