Troops destroy bandits’ enclaves in Bauchi

Nigerian Army Conducts Successful Operations Against Bandits in Bauchi State

Bauchi, Nigeria — The Nigerian Army has reported significant success in recent operations aimed at combating bandit activity in Bauchi State, resulting in the neutralization of numerous bandits and the destruction of their camps.

Governor Bala Mohammed provided details on the military’s efforts during a press briefing following a closed-door security meeting on Monday. He noted that the operations were carried out in collaboration with the Police, other security agencies, and local vigilante groups.

According to the governor, the military forces specifically targeted bandit enclaves located in the Dajin Malam Forest, which connects Bauchi with Plateau and Taraba states. “The troops neutralized thousands of bandits, destroyed camps and motorcycles, and disrupted their supply routes, forcing many to flee the area,” Mohammed stated.

He further disclosed that aerial support was provided by four warplanes, which targeted bandit camps and contributed to the disruption of criminal activities in the forest. “Several bandits were neutralized, while others escaped under sustained military pressure,” he added.

In an effort to consolidate these gains, Governor Mohammed announced that the state government would offer a temporary surrender window for bandits, encouraging them to lay down their arms. He emphasized the importance of a balanced strategy that includes both enforcement and rehabilitation opportunities for those who choose to surrender. Plans are underway to relocate surrendered bandits and their families, as many are not indigenous to Bauchi State.

To bolster long-term security efforts, the governor revealed plans for a biometric data capture initiative targeting residents in affected communities. This measure is part of broader reforms aimed at ending banditry and ensuring overall peace and stability in the region.

Additionally, the government intends to enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering in markets, motor parks, and public areas to monitor activities effectively. Strengthening community-based security systems through the recruitment and support of local vigilantes will also be prioritized to complement the efforts of formal security agencies.
