Shooting Near White House Wounds Suspect, Child Injured
The United States Secret Service responded to gunfire near the White House on Monday, wounding a suspect and briefly triggering a lockdown of the area.
The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, which follows a recent alleged assassination attempt against President Donald Trump. Officials reported that plainclothes Secret Service agents identified a suspicious individual believed to be armed. When uniformed officers arrived, the suspect attempted to flee and opened fire, prompting agents to return fire.
Matthew Quinn, Deputy Director of the Secret Service, stated that the suspect was transported to a hospital after sustaining injuries during the exchange. A weapon was recovered from the scene. Authorities have confirmed that a minor was injured during the incident, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening. Investigators believe the child may have been struck by the suspect’s gunfire, although the circumstances remain unclear.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Quinn indicated that the Secret Service would determine whether the suspect intended to target the president. Preliminary findings suggest there is no evidence linking the suspect to an incident involving Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade, which passed through the area shortly before the shooting.
This event comes in the wake of another alarming incident on April 25, when Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner due to an alleged assassination attempt. That incident is recognized as the third such attempt against the president since 2024.
The suspect in the latest shooting, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, is currently in custody facing multiple charges, including attempted murder of the president, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and illegally transporting firearms across state lines. He was apprehended after allegedly firing a shotgun toward the ballroom’s staircase, and he is accused of wounding a Secret Service agent who was wearing body armor. Allen has not yet entered a plea regarding these charges.
