Uzor Kalu names two major problems crippling Nigeria’s economy
Orji Uzor Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, has identified the high cost of fuel and the devaluation of the naira as critical challenges facing Nigeria’s economy. He made these remarks during a recent interview with News Central Television.
Kalu emphasized that the nation cannot achieve a sustainable economy while relying heavily on oil imports for essential goods. He advocated for a strategic focus on domestic production across various sectors to foster long-term economic stability and growth.
“There are two things crippling this economy: the price of fuel and the price of the dollar,” Kalu stated. He pointed out that dependence on oil alone is insufficient for developing a resilient economic framework. Additionally, he criticized some government officials for their reluctance to make necessary sacrifices to better the economic situation.
“The young people are justified in their frustrations; anyone would ask, ‘When will this be over?’” he noted, reflecting on the persistent economic challenges since Nigeria’s independence in 1960. Kalu, who is involved in production himself, reiterated that an emphasis on productivity is essential for economic recovery.
“If we don’t produce, no matter how much oil we extract from the Niger Delta or other regions, it will not be a solution. The proceeds from oil must be utilized to acquire essential items, especially food,” he concluded.
