WAFCON 2026: Madugu apologises for Super Falcons’ dismal showing, dismisses sack fears
Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has publicly apologized for the team’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Cameroon.
The Super Falcons, who have won the African championship ten times, suffered a 2-1 defeat to their long-standing rivals, the Indomitable Lionesses, missing a chance to qualify for the inter-confederation playoffs. This outcome marks the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1991 that Nigeria will not participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In a post-match statement, Madugu expressed his regret, stating, “First of all, I have to apologize to Nigerians over our inability to make it to the World Cup. It was not our intention. We came and did the best that we could, but our best was not good enough. We are very sorry for that, and we take full responsibility for everything that happened.”
The coach’s position has drawn criticism, with calls for his dismissal following the Super Falcons’ lackluster performance. However, Madugu remains steadfast, indicating he is not worried about the potential for being sacked. “I am not afraid of being sacked. To the glory of God, I have served my country. It was a privilege that was given to me,” he said.
Madugu highlighted his overall record, noting that he has managed 28 games, winning 19, losing four, and drawing four. He acknowledged the significance of the recent defeats, which he described as occurring at crucial moments within the competition.
