Nigerian Democratic Congress Leader Rejects Move to APC, Advocates for Political Diversity
The national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has explained his decision not to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He cites a commitment to preventing Nigeria from becoming a one-party state as a primary reason for his refusal.
During a visit from the management of Leadership Newspaper on Thursday, Dickson discussed the challenges facing his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He indicated that these difficulties prompted him to pursue the establishment of a new political platform.
Reflecting on the political landscape, Dickson stated that the formation of the NDC occurred during a time when the prospects for establishing a robust opposition party seemed bleak. He emphasized that the internal issues within the PDP influenced his choice to explore alternative political avenues instead of joining the APC.
“I did not believe Nigeria should become a one-party state,” Dickson said.
He underscored the importance of maintaining political competition and providing Nigerians with additional avenues for democratic engagement. Rather than merging into an existing party, Dickson and his associates opted to create a new organization capable of effectively challenging the ruling party.
“Months down the line, we have built a formidable party and a major opposition platform in Nigeria,” he added, highlighting the progress the NDC has made since its inception.
