2027: PDP picks Adebutu as Ogun guber candidate

PDP Selects Adebutu as Ogun Governorship Candidate for 2027 Election

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially named Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State. The announcement came during the party’s primary held on Sunday in Abeokuta, the state capital, where Adebutu received widespread support from party members across all 236 wards.

Chief Afolabi Ariyo, Chairman of the PDP Governorship Primary Panel, announced the results through a voice vote, confirming Adebutu’s status as the party’s candidate.

“I hereby declare that Hon. Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu is the winner and is returned as the consensus candidate,” Ariyo stated.

The primary drew numerous PDP leaders and stakeholders, including former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, who expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in the upcoming election.

Fayose praised the significant turnout of supporters, indicating strong public backing for Adebutu and the PDP. “What we saw outside this hall portends hope; hope that reflects the readiness of the people to put Ladi Adebutu in the office of the Governor of Ogun State,” he said. Fayose also emphasized that Adebutu’s political future is now solely linked to the governorship position.

In his acceptance speech, Adebutu thanked party leaders and supporters for their trust and committed to presenting a united front in the lead-up to the election. He expressed confidence that the 2027 vote would be fair and that he would be elected as the next governor.

“Adequate votes will count this time,” he said, urging party members to maintain unity to overcome the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He criticized the APC government for not effectively leveraging Ogun’s resources, asserting that the state has suffered under prolonged mismanagement.

“Our state has remained in dire need of competent leadership despite our enormous natural and human resources,” Adebutu remarked.

He called for collective efforts in restoring the PDP to power, which he believes is essential for improving the lives of Ogun residents. Adebutu also recognized the commitment of fellow aspirants who agreed to the consensus arrangement, stating, “There is no loser among us; we have all won for the party and the good people of Ogun State.”

Adebutu pledged that, if elected, the PDP would prioritize effective governance and development for Ogun State, with detailed policy plans to be revealed later.

Earlier, Ogun State PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella described the primary as a demonstration of the party’s unity, urging members to work collaboratively for electoral success in 2027.

“The successful conduct of this primary has shown that the PDP in Ogun State is strong, united, and focused,” he said.
