2027: Scrutinise candidates’ background, records – Ogun monarch to residents
Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, has called on residents to critically evaluate potential candidates ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections. He emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny of anyone seeking to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun, urging voters to prioritize qualifications over party affiliation or ethnic considerations.
The monarch made his remarks on Saturday during the inauguration of his private residence in Obada-Oko, where he spoke to journalists about the forthcoming election. He underscored the responsibility of the media, civil society, and voters to investigate the backgrounds of candidates vying for office.
“Let me use this opportunity to tell the electorate, civil society organizations, and the press that whoever is going to become the next governor of Ogun State after Dapo Abiodun should be thoroughly scrutinized,” he stated. “It is very important. We do not have another place to call our state.”
Oba Akinyemi stressed that every candidate, regardless of their political affiliation, should undergo this examination, including a review of their family backgrounds. He encouraged residents to ask crucial questions about the individuals they consider for governance.
“This is no longer just about politics; it is about us and the critical stakeholders in the state,” he added. “Everyone who belongs here must ensure that we thoroughly understand the background and credentials of anyone who aspires to lead us.”
Addressing the internal conflicts within the Ogun chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the king called for urgent reconciliation between factions led by Olamilekan Adeola and Abayomi Hunye. He noted that ongoing divisions could have detrimental effects on the party’s performance in the upcoming elections.
“My advice to them is simple: put your house in order and stop unnecessarily heating the polity on the internet,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Oba Akinyemi affirmed that traditional rulers should maintain political neutrality while guiding their communities in making informed electoral choices. He recognized the achievements of the Abiodun administration but insisted that the next governor must meet higher standards.
“The man coming after him must be tested and trusted. Ogun deserves nothing less,” he concluded.
