Wike Predicts Tinubu’s Northern Support, Challenges Atiku’s Prospects in South

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure a minimum of 25 percent of the vote in every state across Northern Nigeria in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. In contrast, Wike suggested that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may struggle to surpass the 10 percent threshold in several Southern states.
During a media briefing in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, Wike criticized claims that Tinubu’s support in the North is wavering, labeling such assertions as baseless. He emphasized the importance of evaluating both candidates’ support bases.
“There is no way in the North that the president will not make 25 percent. There are many places in the South where Atiku won’t reach 10 percent,” Wike stated.
The minister specified several states within the North Central region where he believes Tinubu will prevail. “In North Central, who will win in Plateau? The President will take Plateau. He will win in Nasarawa, Kwara, and Kogi,” he said, asserting that his predictions are rooted in observable political dynamics rather than conjecture.
Wike also countered the notion that the prevailing economic challenges could impede Tinubu’s chances for re-election. He argued that issues of hunger have historically played a limited role in shaping electoral outcomes in Nigeria. “Is there any election that had no hunger in Nigeria? Mention one. Even during Buhari’s election, people spoke about insecurity and hunger, yet they still voted,” he added.
The minister’s remarks highlight ongoing political dynamics as the country approaches the 2027 elections, with both major candidates gearing up for what could be a contentious campaign season.
