As strategists within President Bola Tinubu’s administration devise a pathway for his re-election bid in 2027, Kaduna State emerges as a critical focus. Known for its political complexity, Kaduna represents a microcosm of Nigeria, characterized by diverse ethnic and religious groups.
Contrary to popular belief, political analysts assert that Kaduna’s significance extends beyond its size. While Kano boasts the highest voter population and Lagos serves as the President’s political stronghold, Kaduna’s unique demographics and vote distribution are pivotal in electoral calculations.
Kaduna is divided into predominantly Muslim northern areas and Christian southern regions. This division is coupled with the coexistence of various ethnic groups, including the Hausa-Fulani, Bajju, Atyap, Ham, Gwong, and over 60 others. The state is still seen as a historical center of power, echoing sentiments expressed by the late politician Dr. Junaid Mohammed about its influential legacy in Northern Nigeria.
For Tinubu, securing votes in Kaduna is essential. In the 2023 election, approximately 25 million of over 93 million registered voters participated, with the North-West region contributing about 6.5 million votes, and Kaduna alone accounting for 4.3 million; the third largest voter base in the region.
Despite the All Progressives Congress (APC) generally dominating the North-West, Kaduna presents a more challenging landscape. In the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led with 554,360 votes, while Tinubu followed with 399,293 votes, and Peter Obi received 294,494. However, the APC successfully won the governorship race.
The political dynamics in Kaduna are nuanced, as no party can claim total control. Winning requires a strategic approach at the polling unit and ward levels. A positive outcome in Kaduna could provide crucial momentum leading into the general election, while a loss could demoralize supporters across the North-West.
Since 2023, political realignments have occurred. Tinubu remains with the APC, while prominent opposition figures like Atiku and Obi have shifted platforms. Locally, discussions revolve around economic issues, reflecting a politically aware electorate. Residents voice concerns over inflation and the cost of living, emphasizing that economic stability will significantly influence voter decisions.
Kaduna is home to influential institutions such as Jama’atu Nasril Islam, the Council of Imams and Ulamas, and the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Statements and opinions from these groups resonate beyond state borders, illustrating the importance of shaping public discourse.
Despite challenges, including public criticism of Tinubu’s policies, there has been a relative improvement in security and everyday life in the state over the past year. Incidents of kidnappings have decreased, leading to a cautious return to normalcy for farmers and commuters. If this trend continues, it could bolster Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
While security improvements are vital, they are not the sole determining factor in the upcoming election. Voter sentiment regarding economic conditions remains paramount. The 2023 adoption of a Muslim-Muslim ticket also left lingering concerns, particularly in Southern Kaduna, a factor that could complicate Tinubu’s efforts for increased support in that area.
Political analyst Dr. Joseph Anuga emphasized the importance of approaching the 2027 election with an understanding of local sentiments and voter motivations. The elections will likely reflect a variety of views on leadership, ethnicity, and economic realities.
Minister of Works Engr. David Umahi, serving as Deputy Director General for the APC’s 2027 Presidential Campaign, highlighted the significance of infrastructural projects like the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road. He asserted that successful projects and improved living conditions would translate into electoral support for Tinubu.
As preparations for the 2027 election intensify, the outcome in Kaduna is poised to serve as a bellwether. The road to the next presidential election runs through this pivotal state, making its significance undeniable.
