2027: ‘Young traders have gone bankrupt, I’ll reopen all borders’ – Atiku
Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has vowed to reopen all borders in northern Nigeria to facilitate legitimate trade.
Abubakar, a former vice president, made this commitment during a recent online address to his supporters. He emphasized that the current border closures have left numerous young traders in the region facing unemployment and financial hardship. If elected president in 2027, he promised to support the revival of their businesses.
He highlighted the negative impact of border closures on employment, stating that it has contributed to an increase in security challenges in the area.
“The northern states share borders with Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Benin Republic, and all the borders have been closed,” Abubakar said.
He pointed out that many young individuals engaged in trans-border trading have turned to legitimate businesses, but the closures have resulted in widespread bankruptcies and unemployment.
“Young men and women with capital exceeding one million naira, hiring two to three others, have become bankrupt and jobless. How can we ensure security under these conditions? I will reopen all the borders,” he asserted.
