COVID-19 scare in Cross River as Chinese national isolated at UCTH

Cross River State Isolates Chinese National with Suspected COVID-19 Infection

Cross River State officials have confirmed the isolation of a Chinese national at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital following a suspected COVID-19 infection.

Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, the state’s Commissioner for Health, reported the case to journalists in Calabar on Tuesday. He indicated that the patient is currently receiving treatment and is under close medical observation.

The individual arrived in Nigeria from Lagos on March 17, 2026, before traveling to Calabar en route to a factory located in the Akamkpa Local Government Area. Symptoms were initially detected at a local clinic.

Ayuk stated that the case was promptly referred to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, where necessary isolation protocols were enacted. He emphasized that the state had activated its public health response mechanisms.

“We have initiated all necessary procedures, including contact tracing and isolation, to prevent further spread,” Ayuk said. He added that officials are collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in this effort.

Residents were assured that the situation is being managed effectively, and the Commissioner urged the public to remain calm while the government works to contain any potential outbreak.

Dr. Olatunde Yewande, the World Health Organization coordinator in the state, and State Epidemiologist Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong also confirmed the measures taken, noting that surveillance and response systems have been reinforced.

They cautioned that COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can present symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including fever, cough, fatigue, and difficulty breathing.

Health authorities advised residents to adhere to preventive measures such as regular hand hygiene, vaccination, mask-wearing in crowded environments, and avoiding close contact with suspected cases. Early detection and prompt isolation, they emphasized, are crucial in limiting the virus’s transmission.
