30 unity schools old students compete for glory as national sports fiesta holds in Enugu

FGC Ikot Ekpene Competes for USOSA Sports Title
Federal Government College (FGC), Ikot Ekpene, is vying to defend its title at the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) national sports fiesta, facing competition from 29 other schools.
Last year’s competition saw FGC Ikot Ekpene secure the overall championship, and this year’s event is being held in Enugu, where it will feature 30 Unity Schools from around the country.
The week-long fiesta includes various sports such as football, tug of war, swimming, tennis, badminton, volleyball, and basketball, among others.
During a courtesy visit to Professor Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the Government of Enugu State, USOSA President-General Michael Magaji emphasized the importance of the annual event in fostering unity and national integration.
“This year, Enugu is hosting 30 schools to compete, interact, and reconnect,” Magaji said. “The event demonstrates that individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together, compete, and maintain a standard of excellence.” He noted that local schools would also participate through invitational events, broadening community involvement.
Magaji advocated for quality education, urging reforms that address not only infrastructure but also inclusion and nation-building. He pointed to Enugu’s smart-school initiative, which aims to provide underprivileged communities with access to modern education resources.
“USOSA is dedicated to enhancing education through advocacy and direct interventions,” he said, focusing on adapting teaching methods for the 21st-century learner.
In response, Onyia remarked that the state’s education reform program is still in its early stages but is progressing, particularly with the Smart Green Schools initiative. He added that following discussions with USOSA regarding curriculum and teaching strategies, many of these schools have begun enrolling students.
