Over 80 cows die after eating suspected poisonous grass in Adamawa

Dozens of Cows Die in Poisoning Incident in Adamawa State

CHAMBAJAULE, Adamawa State — A tragic incident in Chafajaule village, located in the Ribadu District of the Fufore Local Government Area, resulted in the deaths of nearly 80 cows, reportedly due to ingestion of toxic grasses.

Dr. Bartholomew Nyalas, the Director of Veterinary Services in Adamawa State, confirmed the fatalities in a statement to reporters on Monday. He indicated that cyanide poisoning is suspected, which can occur when cattle consume a type of wild sorghum.

Nyalas explained that the wild sorghum tends to thrive in the region following the initial rainfall of the season. He noted that high concentrations of this plant can be lethal for livestock.

“Most of the cows were destroyed at the site of the incident in Chafajaule,” Nyalas said, adding that a team visited the Jimeta abattoir in the same division as part of their assessment.
