YOBE STATE, Nigeria — Troops from the 159 Battalion apprehended two alleged terrorists during a stop-and-search operation on April 30, 2023, at a checkpoint in Kanama, Yobe State.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, the suspects were identified as Dahiru Mohammed, 40, and Ismail Adamu, 34, both of whom are residents of Geidam. The arrests occurred around 8:00 a.m. as the suspects were returning from the Damasak market.
Makama noted that the suspects were intercepted during a routine security check that revealed potential links to terrorism. Preliminary investigations reportedly uncovered incriminating images on their mobile devices, suggesting affiliations with extremist groups.
Authorities recovered several items from the suspects, including two smartphones, seven hijabs, seven pairs of footwear, two towels, 107 veils, one umbrella, two prayer mats, 34 turbans, a set of prayer beads, children’s clothing, and a cash sum of 408,500 Naira.
