Kwankwaso, Obi may dump ADC for NDC – Report

Kwankwaso, Obi May Leave ADC for NDC, Sources Indicate

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA—Political insiders suggest that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, are poised to defect from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

This potential shift comes amid increasing pressure within Nigeria’s opposition landscape and growing grassroots agitation. If confirmed, the move would represent a significant realignment in the country’s political dynamics.

Sources indicate that the decision has been largely settled, with a formal announcement anticipated as early as Monday. An unofficial statement reportedly signed by Revd Plus Ndubueze Ukachukwu, Chairman of the Kwankwasiya Movement, claimed, “We formally announce the defection of our leader, Senator Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This decision is in the best interest of Nigeria, and aligns with our goal to meet the aspirations of all citizens.”

In a response on Saturday, the NDC clarified that the defections of Obi and Kwankwaso remain uncertain. Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, stated that discussions were still in the realm of probability rather than certainty.

He observed, “This unequivocal clarification of the party is coming on the heels of politically sensitive reportage by various media, which has led to some sensationalism in the public discourse.”

The NDC has been actively encouraging politicians from both governing and opposition parties to join their ranks, promoting the initiative as a “Noah’s Ark” aimed at bringing together diverse political ideologies. Abdulsalam reiterated that the NDC does not preclude or coerce defections but remains open to those seeking to align with their vision for governance.

He added, “While discussions with key opposition leaders, including some from the APC, are ongoing, the NDC will continue to welcome anyone wishing to contribute to national progress.”

As negotiations develop among opposition parties, including discussions about a potential alliance for the 2027 elections, the political landscape remains fluid.

This report follows earlier indications of Kwankwaso and Obi’s dissatisfaction within the ADC, further complicating the political environment as the country approaches future elections.
