Peter Akah makes case for Armed Forces’ welfare

Advocate Calls for Improved Welfare for Nigerian Military
Peter Akah, a prominent advocate for military reform, has urged the Nigerian government to enhance welfare programs for its armed forces.
During an interview on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” on Monday, Akah emphasized the importance of ensuring that service members receive adequate care and support. He expressed concern over reports of neglect towards military personnel, stating that it is critical to provide for those who protect the nation.
“A well-cared-for military is indicative of a well-protected nation,” Akah said. He highlighted ongoing issues within the military, including incidents of retaliation against officers who speak up regarding their welfare.
“Currently, there are reports of an officer who was dismissed for raising concerns about military conditions. This raises questions about the purpose of military laws — are they designed to protect the officers or to control them?” he asked.
Akah further suggested that the military command should proactively address such issues. “If the military is genuinely improving conditions, they should communicate that clearly to the public,” he said. “Responding with transparency would help dispel negative perceptions and reinforce trust.”
