Lagos seals Balmoral Convention Centre, restaurant over sewage violations

Lagos Wastewater Management Office Shuts Down Convention Center for Sewage Violations

On May 5, 2026, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) closed the Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island due to the improper discharge of raw sewage into the public drainage system.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab stated that the action was prompted by reports indicating that the convention center was using a pumping machine to release untreated waste. Additionally, the facility had been experiencing spillages from a blocked sewage chamber that contributed to foul odors and an environmental nuisance in the vicinity.

“The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office sealed off Balmoral Convention Centre over the indiscriminate discharge of raw sewage,” Wahab said in a press release.

In a related enforcement effort, LSWMO also closed Foodies Restaurant, located at No. 32B Admiralty Way in Lekki Phase I, for discharging untreated wastewater into public drains. Authorities noted that the wastewater from the restaurant contained significant amounts of fat and oil, which clogged drainage channels, causing pollution and unpleasant odors. This action was taken after the establishment had received multiple warnings regarding their wastewater practices.

The Lagos State Government reiterated the importance of adhering to approved wastewater disposal methods. Officials warned that individuals or organizations found in violation of environmental laws could face sanctions, including potential prosecution, in accordance with existing regulations.
