NDLEA uncovers drug caves, underground tunnels in Kano

NDLEA Discovers Caves and Tunnels in Kano Used for Drug Operations

KANO, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Strategic Command has identified a network of caves and underground tunnels allegedly utilized for drug trafficking in the Rimin Kebe area of Kano State.

The agency announced the findings in a press release dated May 6, 2026, from Public Relations Officer Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari. The operation, referred to as “Operation Sharar Mafaka,” took place on May 4, 2026, following an extensive intelligence-gathering effort and surveillance in the region.

Investigators reportedly discovered several caves modified by suspected drug dealers to function as living quarters and distribution centers. Some of these locations were equipped with household items—such as mats, pillows, food flasks, plates, and cutlery—suggesting long-term use and organized activity. Additionally, the statement noted that some tunnels appeared to be under construction, potentially connecting various hideouts underground.

Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, Commander of the Kano Strategic Command, indicated that many of the caves and tunnels have been dismantled, with plans in place to secure and demolish the remaining structures.

“We will continue to pursue these unscrupulous elements wherever they hide,” Lawal declared. He emphasized that the NDLEA’s commitment to combatting the drug trade in Kano is unwavering, urging those involved to reconsider their actions. “Our goal is to rid Kano of this menace,” he added.

Lawal stated that this operation aligns with directives from NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), who has called for intensified efforts against drug networks nationwide.

The command urged local residents to assist in the ongoing fight by reporting any suspicious activities to NDLEA offices, emphasizing that timely information is crucial in addressing substance abuse across the state.
