Lagos Court Remands Man for Alleged Counterfeit Alcohol Production
A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the remand of Chidera Kolins Chukwuka, 30, following his arraignment on charges related to the production and distribution of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
Judge Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa issued the remand on Tuesday after the defendant faced a six-count charge filed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Chukwuka, who pleaded not guilty, is accused of manufacturing and selling adulterated drinks that were packaged to imitate well-known brands, including Johnnie Walker Red Label, Flirt Vodka, Lords Gin London Dry, and Gordon’s Dry Gin.
The prosecution reported that Chukwuka was arrested on April 14, 2026, at Apongbon on Lagos Island, where he allegedly possessed counterfeit and substandard alcoholic products.
The charges against him include possession of unwholesome processed goods, unlawful manufacturing, deceptive packaging, and distributing unregistered products, all of which the prosecution claims pose serious public health risks.
NAFDAC further alleges that Chukwuka operated an illegal production facility where these counterfeit beverages were made and prepared for sale, with misleading packaging intended to deceive consumers.
The offenses are said to violate provisions of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Act, the Food and Drugs Act, and the Food, Drugs and Related Products (Registration) Act.
After Chukwuka entered his plea, the prosecution requested that a trial date be set and that he remain in custody while awaiting trial. Justice Lewis-Allagoa granted the request and ordered that Chukwuka be held by the Nigerian Correctional Service until his bail application is heard.
The case has been adjourned to June 1, 2026, for the commencement of trial. During the proceedings, the prosecution emphasized the health risks associated with counterfeit consumables, particularly alcoholic beverages that may contain harmful substances. The defense indicated it would present its arguments at a later date.
