Again gunmen attack OOU students, cart away car, phones

Title: Armed Robbers Strike Olabisi Onabanjo University Hostels for Second Time in Two Weeks

Ibogun, Ogun State — Armed assailants struck the hostels of Olabisi Onabanjo University’s College of Engineering on Friday morning, marking the second such incident in less than two weeks.

Approximately seven armed men reportedly invaded the student accommodations around 1 a.m., firing weapons and robbing residents of their valuables, which included mobile phones and a vehicle. The crime spree lasted nearly two hours, affecting no fewer than 15 students.

The robbers escaped with a black Lexus ES 350 belonging to one of the students. Oluwafemi Aderupatan, President of the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students Association, confirmed details of the incident and expressed grave concern over the recurring nature of these attacks.

“The armed robbers, about seven of them, attacked students in their hostels in the early hours of Friday,” Aderupatan said. “They were shooting and threatening to kill the students, robbing approximately 15 students before fleeing the scene.”

Despite calls to authorities, including a request for police intervention, Aderupatan stated the police arrived only after the robbers had departed. He criticized the ongoing lack of effective security measures, which were promised following a similar armed robbery incident two weeks ago.

“The police post and robust security presence that the authorities proposed have not yet materialized,” he noted. “The criminals are taking advantage of the weak security arrangements in the area. A stronger police or military presence is essential to deter future attacks.”

Aderupatan urged Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to take action, emphasizing that students can no longer live in fear of such assaults.

In response to the latest incident, Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed that an investigation is underway. “The Ogun State Police Command takes every security concern within the Ibogun campus environment seriously,” she stated. “Efforts are ongoing to ascertain the facts surrounding the report and take necessary action as needed.”

This latest robbery follows a similar incident in the same area two weeks ago, where assailants also targeted student hostels, stealing valuables and assaulting residents.
