He was smiling even in death – Comedian AY on Alex Ekubo’s final moments

Nigerian Comedian AY Reflects on Late Actor Alex Ekubo’s Final Moments
Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, known as AY, has shared insights about the final moments of his friend and fellow actor Alex Ekubo. The tragedy unfolds after Ekubo’s death on May 11, 2026, at a Lagos hospital due to complications from cancer.
Ekubo had been diagnosed with stage four liver cancer in 2024 and had undergone a transplant. However, his liver failed once more in 2026, leading to hospitalization where he later succumbed to complications while on life support.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, AY, who was present during Ekubo’s final moments, noted that his friend was smiling as he passed away. “Some losses do not feel real, no matter how many times you try to process them,” AY wrote. He expressed his grief by reminiscing about their shared experiences in the entertainment industry, stating, “From the laughter to the conversations, the brotherhood, and all the memories we shared, this one hurts deeply.”
AY reflected on the impact of Ekubo’s passing, saying, “I was there. I saw you still smiling even in death. I saw the tears from friends and family. Honestly, a part of me is still in shock. Rest well, my brother. You will be remembered beyond the lights, the cameras, and the fame.”
Additionally, Godwin Nnadiekwe, a close friend of Ekubo, confirmed that the actor had prepared a will prior to his death. Nnadiekwe expressed his sorrow in an Instagram story, stating, “To think you already prepared your will, it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”
