NEW YORK — Nigerian Afrobeats artist Ayra Starr addressed the challenges of unstable electricity supply in Nigeria during her remarks at the Global Citizen NOW event. Starr reflected on how these issues shaped her upbringing and affected her family’s livelihood.

She continued, “The harsh experience made me who I am today. I had to find ways to do what I needed to do without the comfort of electricity.”
Starr also pointed out the potential benefits of a stable electricity supply during her schoolwork, stating that having air conditioning or even a fan would have significantly improved her study environment.
In her closing remarks, Starr urged African leaders to address the continent’s ongoing electricity challenges, asserting that every child deserves access to reliable power and other essential services for healthy development.
