Abuja — Dr. Abdullahi Nasiru, a health expert, has issued a warning to Nigerians about the risks of misdiagnosis when it comes to Ebola Virus Disease, noting that its early symptoms can resemble those of malaria. He emphasized the importance of seeking medical assistance rather than resorting to self-medication.

Addressing the media on Monday, Dr. Nasiru highlighted that symptoms such as fever, headache, weakness, muscle pain, and fatigue are commonly associated with both Ebola and malaria, which can delay the recognition of the potentially deadly virus.

“Many Nigerians often presume that any illness presenting with a fever is malaria, a misconception that can be dangerous,” Dr. Nasiru stated. He further noted that symptoms including fever, body weakness, headache, and vomiting are frequently overlooked or treated informally at home.

Dr. Nasiru urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen, asserting that early detection and treatment are crucial for managing infectious diseases.

In addition, he called upon health authorities to enhance public awareness campaigns, particularly in rural areas, to mitigate panic and misinformation during disease outbreaks.

He also advised residents to uphold proper hygiene practices, avoid contact with infected individuals, and promptly report any suspected cases to health officials.
