Kano Rice mill shut over dust emissions, offensive odour – NESREA

Kano Rice Milling Facility Shut Down for Environmental Violations
KANO, Nigeria — The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has closed a rice milling facility in Kano State due to alleged environmental infractions. The action came after residents reported issues related to dust emissions and a strong odor associated with the facility’s operations.
The enforcement operation occurred on Monday, led by NESREA Zonal Director Abdulraheem Mudashir. He stated that the closure was prompted by numerous complaints from local residents who expressed concerns about pollution and disruptions to their daily lives.
Mudashir noted that inspections revealed the facility had violated the National Environmental Regulations on Food, Beverages, and Tobacco Sector (2009). Specifically, the company failed to adhere to permit conditions and pollution control standards. The agency had previously issued three compliance and abatement notices, all of which went unaddressed.
The facility was found to release excessive dust into the environment and generate odorous emissions that impacted nearby households. Mudashir emphasized that the company had not implemented adequate measures to mitigate dust emissions, contrary to Section 48 of the regulatory framework.
“Despite repeated warnings and notices, the management did not take the necessary steps to comply with environmental regulations,” Mudashir stated, underscoring NESREA’s commitment to enforcing compliance. “Any facility that refuses to comply with environmental standards will be shut down by NESREA.”
The agency’s actions are part of a broader initiative aimed at ensuring that industrial operators adhere to environmental laws, thereby safeguarding public health across Nigeria.
