I had no hand in Obasa’s impeachment — Desmond Elliot

Desmond Elliot Denies Involvement in Speaker Obasa’s Impeachment
LAGOS — Desmond Elliot, the lawmaker representing Surulere I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has refuted allegations that he played a key role in the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in 2025.
In an interview on Tuesday with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Elliot maintained that he neither initiated nor orchestrated the impeachment process. He indicated that he was outside Nigeria during the removal of Obasa and only signed the impeachment document upon his return, after learning that a majority of lawmakers had already endorsed it.
“It was a topic that was already dead and buried,” Elliot remarked. “It was sorted out, and the House is already moving on. Right Honourable Mudashiru Obasa continued as the Speaker of the House.”
He further clarified his role, stating, “I did not mastermind anything. The only thing I did was to append my signature when I came back and saw a bunch of us, if not all of us, had already appended a signature to say, ‘Oh, it was the party who wanted it.’”
Elliot’s comments follow remarks made by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, who suggested during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos last Thursday that Elliot was involved in the controversial move against the Speaker. Gbajabiamila asserted that Elliot’s participation in the crisis nearly jeopardized his political position.
