Husband, wife arrested for stealing 4-month-old baby, other children in Ogun

Couple Arrested for Child Theft in Ogun State
MOWE, Ogun State — Mathew Ugochukwu and his wife, Oluwarankami Ugochukwu, have been arrested for allegedly stealing a four-month-old baby and two other children in the Mowe area of Ogun State.
According to information obtained by DAILY POST, Oluwarankami visited the mother of the infant, who was hospitalized, on Saturday. She reportedly deceived the mother into allowing her to take the child for care, claiming it would allow the mother to rest. However, she fled with the infant.
On Wednesday, police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that detectives from the Mowe Division, under the leadership of CSP Folake Afeniforo, acted quickly on this information. Law enforcement officials heightened security at motor parks and other strategic locations in the area.
Babaseyi reported that the couple was tracked to a location in the Kekere Ekun area of Mowe on Monday evening, where the stolen child was found along with two others in their possession.
“Acting on credible intelligence and sustained surveillance, detectives located the suspects at approximately 7:55 p.m., recovering the stolen infant and two additional children,” Babaseyi said. “The suspects were arrested and taken into custody.”
Furthermore, Babaseyi revealed that one of the recovered children had been reported missing in 2024.
The biological parents of the children have been contacted and were able to confirm the identities of their children. The case has since been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran for further investigation, with the goal of uncovering the full extent of the operation and prosecuting all individuals involved.
In response to the developments, State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the swift action and professionalism of the officers at the Mowe Division. He emphasized the police command’s commitment to combating child trafficking, abductions, and other violent crimes in the state.
