Kano Police Arrest 149 Suspected Thugs Amid Rising Violence

KANO, Nigeria — Following a wave of violence related to the Daba group in Kano city, the Kano State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has detained 149 armed individuals accused of attacking homes throughout the metropolitan area. These incidents have raised safety concerns among local residents.

Police Commissioner Ibrahim Adamu Bakori announced the arrests on Wednesday, during a presentation of dangerous weapons and illegal drugs seized from the suspects.

Bakori noted an increase in social crimes and violent incidents in areas including Fagge, IBB Road, and Hotoro Quarters. He also highlighted security issues along the Kano-Katsina border.

In response, the police have adjusted their strategies in coordination with other security agencies as part of a Joint Task Force (JTF). Enhancements include increased manpower deployment, intensified intelligence operations, targeted raids, and visibility policing.

“These coordinated actions have disrupted criminal networks, restored calm to affected areas, and strengthened public confidence,” Bakori stated.

He explained that additional personnel and resources have been allocated to border local government areas to prevent potential infiltration and enhance rapid response capabilities.

From April 20 to May 20, 2026, the police achieved significant operational results, including the arrest of 18 armed robbery suspects, five suspected kidnappers, 32 alleged drug dealers, and 12 suspected vehicle thieves. Additionally, the police reported the safe rescue of three kidnapping victims, who have since been reunited with their families.

The recovered items include one pistol, four locally made revolver guns, a dane gun, and numerous bladed weapons.

All suspects are currently under investigation and will face charges in accordance with legal procedures.

Bakori emphasized the command’s commitment to professionalism and accountability, as mandated by the Inspector-General of Police. He noted that efforts to strengthen supervision and disciplinary mechanisms have been implemented to address officer misconduct effectively.

“We have expanded structured engagements with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, and community organizations,” Bakori remarked. These forums aim to tackle the underlying causes of crime and promote community trust in policing efforts.

Moreover, collaboration with military forces, the Department of State Services, and local security groups has been enhanced. Ongoing joint patrols and real-time intelligence sharing focus on securing border areas to deter the movement of armed criminals into the state.
