Ogun: Avalon Industrial Estate shut down over illegal waste disposal

Ogun State Shuts Down Avalon Industrial Estate Over Environmental Violations

The Ogun State Government has closed Avalon Industrial Estate, located in Moloko-Asipa along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway, due to environmental violations. This action follows infractions of multiple provisions in the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law, enacted in 2020.

Avalon Industrial Estate contains several businesses, including Cherry Motors, May Mall, Hongfu Building Materials Industry, Oolala Global Trading Company, Buyang Industry Limited, Leku Industry, and Abec Kuka Foams.

On Friday, Farook Akintunde, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), announced the shutdown. He stated that the companies within the estate were found guilty of dumping waste, including hazardous materials, in both their immediate environment and the surrounding community.

Akintunde noted that the estate’s practices violated Section 34(1) of the Ogun State Waste Management Law of 2020, along with Section 17, which prohibits the use of unauthorized waste collectors.

“They were also found culpable of dumping waste at illegal dumpsites and obstructing government-licensed waste collectors from carrying out their duties at the estate since 2023, in violation of OGWAMA regulations,” he said.

Despite efforts to address these issues, including providing the estate an opportunity to respond to the allegations and scheduling a facility tour, Akintunde reported that officials were barred from performing their inspections.

“As a government agency, we cannot stand by while Avalon Industrial Estate continues to disregard our laws and prevent officials from executing their responsibilities,” Akintunde added.

He stated that the estate will remain closed until all violations are remedied and the management commits in writing to comply with all waste management regulations in the state.
