Task force seals high-tension site, 37 other illegal structures in Kano

Kano State Government Seals Illegal Construction Sites
KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government’s Special Task Force Committee on Illegal Structures has ordered the closure of an illegal plaza construction in Unguwar Wambai, Gwale Local Government Area. This operation, conducted on Tuesday, also targeted 37 additional structures throughout the state.
The initiative was led by officials from the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), who stated that the action aimed to mitigate safety risks and enforce compliance with building regulations.
Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, Chairman of the committee and Director General of KANGIS, emphasized that the site was located in a high-risk area unsafe for construction. “There cannot be buildings close to high tension lines. That is why we stopped, sealed, and secured the place immediately,” he said.
Sani described the ongoing construction as illegal and highlighted urgent safety concerns that necessitated government intervention. “This is illegal. How can someone build in a risk zone? This is a danger area, and the government does not want to jeopardize the lives of Kano residents,” he stated.
He outlined the need for a restricted zone, recommending that at least 50 feet be left clear on both sides of high-tension areas. Failure to comply could endanger lives and properties, he warned.
Sani also issued a stern warning to the owners of the illegal structures to cease work. “We are calling on the owner of this structure to stop immediately. It is for their own benefit. If they refuse to comply, the government will take drastic legal action. This will serve as a deterrent to others,” he explained.
He urged residents and developers in Kano to adhere to planning laws and regulations, asserting that compliance is essential for enhancing public safety and organization within the state. “We want the people of Kano to do the right thing and abide by the laws so that Kano will be a good model,” he added.
In addition to the plaza in Unguwar Wambai, the task force also sealed structures along the Eastern and Western Bypass corridors, including truck parks, ongoing construction sites, and fuel station projects. The affected locations include an unfinished building at Eastern Bypass, a two-storey plaza, a 300-meter row of shops, and several garages.
The task force’s actions reflect the state government’s commitment to enforcing building regulations and ensuring public safety.
