UCDA demolishes shanties in Umuahia, says they were hideouts for criminals

Umuahia Authorities Demolish Illegal Structures in Effort to Enhance Public Safety

Umuahia, Abia State — The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has carried out the demolition of unapproved shops, shanties, and other temporary structures in the Isiama Afaraukwu area of Umuahia North Local Government Area.

Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, General Manager of UCDA, stated that the action was taken in response to concerns that some of these structures were being used as hideouts for criminals and drug traffickers. He emphasized that prior to the demolitions conducted on Tuesday, property owners were issued notices on March 17 and April 17, 2026.

Agomoh explained that the demolition aligns with the UCDA’s mandate as outlined in the Abia State Urban and Regional Planning Board and Town Planning Authorities Law, Cap 40, Volume 2, 2005, as amended. He indicated that this initiative is not limited to Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku and will extend throughout the state capital, reinforcing the government’s commitment to removing defacing structures.

He refuted claims that the demolition occurred without proper notice and encouraged other owners of similar structures to voluntarily dismantle them.

In a related development, Abia State Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu has rejected allegations claiming his involvement in the demolition of properties owned by residents of Afara. Through his Chief Press Secretary, Cyril Eke Mba, Emetu described the allegations as unfounded and suggested they were intended to incite public unrest.
