Some Nigerians have turned insecurity into commercial venture – PDP chieftain

Ehilebo Critiques Insecurity as Commercial Venture in Nigeria
Anthony Ehilebo, a prominent leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concerns that insecurity in Nigeria has been exploited for commercial gain. During an appearance on News Central’s Politics HQ on Friday, Ehilebo attributed the persistent security challenges to the government’s failure to hold terrorists accountable.
He highlighted the case of Boko Haram’s abduction of schoolgirls in Borno State, noting that more than a decade later, those responsible remain unpunished. “When Boko Haram kidnapped girls in Borno State, we have not found those responsible and held them to account,” he said. “Buni Yadi happened, and nobody was held accountable, which allowed the scourge to spread to other schools.”
Ehilebo also warned of the alarming transformation of kidnapping into an economic enterprise. He pointed to a recent incident involving a Special Assistant to a state governor, who was reportedly kidnapped while allegedly attempting to secure ransom payments for herself.
“This has now become an industry for some individuals, motivated by economic factors,” Ehilebo stated. He further noted that geopolitical factors and political will are crucial in addressing the root causes of these security issues, which he believes are intertwined with the ideological underpinnings of groups like Boko Haram.
Ehilebo emphasized the need for a comprehensive and accountable approach from the government to effectively combat the multifaceted nature of insecurity in Nigeria.
