UK tightens immigration rules, may ban Nigerian students, others

UK Introduces Stricter Immigration Rules for Universities

The United Kingdom has implemented new immigration regulations that may restrict universities from enrolling international students, including those from Nigeria, if they do not meet updated compliance standards.

The UK Home Office announced these measures in a statement issued on Friday, indicating that the reforms aim to address issues of visa system misuse associated with study, work, and tourism applications, which have been linked to an increase in asylum claims.

Under the revised rules, universities face the risk of losing their sponsorship licenses if more than 5% of student visa applications are rejected, a decrease from the previous threshold of 10%. Additionally, institutions will be evaluated based on performance metrics, including a minimum 95% student enrollment rate and a 90% course completion rate, up from earlier targets of 90% and 85%.

The Home Office emphasized that failure to adhere to these standards could result in penalties, including the loss of the ability to admit international students.

“High dropout rates can indicate that students are entering the illegal workforce rather than pursuing their studies, while elevated visa rejection rates or low enrollment figures suggest insufficient due diligence on the part of certain institutions,” the Home Office stated.

This policy change follows earlier restrictions placed on study visa applicants from countries such as Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. According to the government, asylum claims from international students have decreased by 30% due to stricter enforcement.

Approximately 306,000 students with expiring visas have been advised to leave the UK or face removal if they submit unfounded asylum claims.
