Kano State Prepares for Mass Wedding, 720 Couples Undergo Medical Screening

KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Hisbah Board has reported that nearly 720 prospective couples have completed medical screenings in preparation for a state-sponsored mass wedding aimed at assisting low-income residents. This initiative is part of a broader goal to marry 3,000 couples in the region.

The screenings, which include tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug use, pregnancy, and other sexually transmitted infections, are being conducted in collaboration with the State Ministry of Health. This effort aims to ensure the health of the participants ahead of the wedding ceremony.

Mujahideen Aminudddeen, Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, confirmed that the screening process is ongoing. Couples from metropolitan local government areas are set to continue their screenings on Wednesday at the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS (KSACA) office in Naibawa. He noted that participants are required to present copies of their registration forms at the screening venue, while couples from other local government areas will be informed of their screening dates soon.

The mass wedding program, which has been revitalized under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, aims to provide assistance to widows, divorcees, orphans, and other economically disadvantaged individuals. The state intends to cover marriage expenses and offer financial and household support to the beneficiaries.
