I did not receive security votes as Lagos governor – Fashola

Former Lagos Governor Claims No Personal Security Votes Received During Tenure
Babatunde Fashola, a former governor of Lagos State, stated that he did not receive security votes at any point during his eight years in office.
Fashola made this assertion on Friday while participating in a panel discussion at a June 12 Democracy Day event organized by The Platform. He shared the stage with former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
In response to inquiries regarding the allocation and effectiveness of security votes for state governments, especially amid Nigeria’s ongoing security concerns, Fashola refuted the common belief that governors receive these funds directly. He characterized such assumptions as unfounded.
He emphasized that during his administration, no security vote funds were allocated personally to him. Instead, he noted that all financial resources belonging to the state government were managed through established institutional procedures, rather than being under the direct control of the governor.
Fashola, who also served as Minister of Works, Power, and Housing under the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, explained that revenues generated for Lagos State during his tenure were handled by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
His comments come at a time of heightened scrutiny regarding the management, transparency, and accountability of security votes among state governments across Nigeria.
