Digital postcode to transform commerce, security, cut delivery costs — Tijani

Nigeria to Launch Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the imminent launch of its Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, aiming to enhance commerce, bolster security, and reduce delivery costs across the nation.

During a workshop in Abuja on the new postcode system, Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, highlighted the initiative as a vital component of national infrastructure designed to tackle the persistent issue of inadequate addressing systems in Nigeria.

“You can’t really get many things done without a digital postcode system,” Tijani stated. “This system will be crucial for solving crimes in a timely manner, containing threats, and ultimately saving lives.”

He emphasized that each building in Nigeria will be assigned a unique alphanumeric code. This will facilitate precise location identification, improve service delivery, and align with the country’s digital transformation goals.

Tola Odeyemi, Postmaster General and CEO of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), reiterated the system’s significance, citing substantial financial losses currently stemming from inaccurate deliveries. “In Nigeria, the cost of misdeliveries ranges from N50 billion to N80 billion, largely due to the lack of clear addresses,” she noted.

Odeyemi further explained that the new system would enhance routing, delivery pricing, and logistics planning by providing more accurate location data. She also assured citizens that stringent measures would be implemented to protect personal information, stressing that access to address data would be tightly regulated.
