Nasarawa: Police warn politicians against premature campaigns

Nasarawa State Police Command Issues Warning to Political Aspirants Amid Recent Violence

The Nasarawa State Police Command has issued a warning to politicians and their supporters against conducting campaigns, rallies, and other political activities that contravene the Electoral Act. This announcement follows a recent violent clash between rival political factions in the state, which resulted in property damage, vandalized campaign materials, and harm to vehicles belonging to residents.

In a statement released Monday by Police Public Relations Officer SP Ramhan Nansel, Commissioner of Police CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed emphasized the necessity for all political actors to adhere to regulations outlined in the Electoral Act governing political campaigns. The Act specifies that political campaigning cannot begin earlier than 150 days prior to an election and must cease 24 hours before election day.

The Commissioner expressed concern about the disruptive behavior of some political supporters, highlighting that such actions threaten the stability and peace currently enjoyed in Nasarawa State.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains neutral and is committed to ensuring a fair environment for all political candidates while safeguarding lives and property,” Mohammed stated.

He urged political parties, aspirants, and their supporters to comply with legal provisions concerning campaign activities. Furthermore, individuals or groups found in violation of the Electoral Act, engaging in political violence, or otherwise threatening public peace will face arrest and prosecution.

The Commissioner also appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to advise their associates against violence and political intolerance.

“The Command will utilize all lawful measures to maintain public order and protect residents from intimidation and harassment,” he added.

The Nasarawa State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring peace and security throughout the region, encouraging residents to remain law-abiding and to report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
