Police arrest doctor, parents over alleged sale of newborn in Lagos

Lagos Police Arrest Four in Alleged Infant Sale
Lagos State Police have arrested a medical doctor, a traditional birth attendant, and the parents of a newborn in connection with the alleged sale of the infant for 2.5 million naira.
Investigations began after it was revealed that the 28-year-old mother and her boyfriend decided against raising their child after birth. They sought individuals to facilitate the sale.
The couple was reportedly linked to a potential buyer in the Ikorodu area through intermediaries involved in the arrangement.
According to police findings, the woman was initially taken to a traditional birth attendant for delivery. Complications during labor necessitated her transfer to a private hospital in Ikorodu, where the primary suspect, a medical doctor, performed a Caesarean section, ensuring the safety of both the mother and the newborn.
Officials allege that arrangements for the sale of the child were finalized shortly after the delivery took place within the hospital.
Following the payment of 2.5 million naira, the baby was handed over to an unidentified buyer, who remains at large.
Lagos Police Commissioner Fatai Tijani has ordered that the case be transferred from the Area E Command in Festac to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
The case involves allegations of conspiracy, child stealing, and human trafficking. It is currently under the purview of the Anti-Human Trafficking/Gender Unit of the SCID, supervised by Deputy Commissioner of Police Dayo Akinbisehin.
