EFCC arraigns man for allegedly defrauding American investors

Uyo, Nigeria — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally charged Victor Ekpong Thompson in the Federal High Court in Uyo, alleging he defrauded American investors of $525,276.

Thompson faces eight counts of obtaining money under false pretenses. According to the EFCC, he deceived investors by promising to facilitate investments in mineral resources and deep-sea port projects. Notable complainants include Tammy Jensen, Kenneth Blad, and Peter Jensen.

One specific count details that between April and December 2024, Thompson allegedly obtained $213,350 from the investors through fraudulent means, violating the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act of 2006. Thompson pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read.

During the proceedings, the prosecution, led by Joshua Abolarin, urged the court to remand Thompson in custody while awaiting trial. In contrast, his attorney, Savn Daniel, filed a bail application, which the prosecution opposed.

Justice Maureen Adaobi postponed the case until March 19, 2026, to rule on the bail request and to begin the trial. She ordered Thompson to remain at the EFCC detention facility in Uyo during this period.
